Most Pleasanton neighborhoods are defined by what runs through them. Valley Trails is defined by what runs around it. The Arroyo Mocho, Centennial, and Pleasanton Canal trails form a near-continuous ring at the edges of the courts that branch off North and South Valley Trails, which is a piece of geography that residents cross every day without thinking of as a single line. This fall is a good excuse to think of it that way, because a few new fixtures on the outside of that ring have made closing the loop worth the effort.
That is the whole argument of this post. If you live here, the neighborhood is already familiar. What is less familiar is treating the trail ring as one route and the businesses along Hopyard and downtown as the stops that pace it. October 2026 in particular has a schedule that rewards a resident who plans the month, not the weekend.
The ring, in the order you would actually walk it
The trail encirclement is not a marketing phrase. The Arroyo Mocho, Centennial, and Pleasanton Canal Trails encircle the subdivision, and the layout of the neighborhood, built by Morrison Homes between 1968 and 1971 as a cul-de-sac plan with only two entrances, means the trails often feel less like public infrastructure and more like a shared back fence.
A few things worth knowing if you have never walked the entire perimeter in one go:
- The Arroyo Mocho segment on the west side runs below street level along the creek, with a paralleling upper trail that allows access to the surrounding neighborhoods and nearby Ken Mercer Sports Park. That upper path is the one to take when the lower gravel is soft after rain.
- The first 9 miles of the Arroyo Mocho offer little to no shade cover or easily accessible water, which stops mattering in October. Late September through early November is the trail's actual season, not summer.
- The full peripheral path around Ken Mercer, if you cross Hopyard to add it in, is 2.15 miles on its own, which is enough to pad a Valley Trails loop into a real morning without driving anywhere.
A quiet fact about the neighborhood: the two-entrance layout that keeps traffic low is the same layout that makes the trail ring feel private. You are walking a public easement that behaves like a shared amenity.
What actually changed on the outside of the ring
The single largest new fixture near Valley Trails opened on the Hopyard side of the ring in January. Located at 5121 Hopyard Road, the 11,000-square-foot restaurant, bar and event space is connected to the Four Points hotel. Pivot Craft Kitchen & Sports Bar comes from the team behind Sabio on Main downtown, and in around six to eight weeks, the restaurant will open four private suites, which can accommodate up to 15 people, and will feature big screen TVs with WiF and AV capabilities suitable for parties and meetings. It also offers two Topgolf Swing Suites that can hold up to 75 people and offer sports simulators for golf, football, soccer, and more. The outdoor firepit patio was scheduled to open by spring, which puts it firmly in the "sit outside in October" category by now.
Why this matters if you already live in Valley Trails: the walk from the northern edge of the neighborhood across Hopyard to Pivot is short enough that the restaurant now functions as a trail endpoint. That is a genuinely new category for the neighborhood. The nearest options have historically been the older Hopyard Village anchors like The Hop Yard American Alehouse & Grill, Porky's Pizza Palace, Bill's Cafe, El Rancho Grande Taqueria, and Gene's Fine Foods. Those are still there, still good, and Bill's remains the honest choice for a post-walk breakfast. Pivot adds a fall-evening option the corner did not have.
The October calendar, weekend by weekend
Downtown is a short drive across town, and the Pleasanton Downtown Association has structured October so that a resident who cares about the neighborhood can pick one weekend to be a tourist in their own city. The dates below come from the PDA's 2026 schedule as reported in early February.

Weekends on Main are back from Oct. 2-4, including Pleasanton Palooza and the BMX Bike Fest on the Saturday (Oct. 3) and Porsches on Main on the Sunday (Oct. 4), and four popular returning events will round out the 2026 schedule for the PDA: Halloween Brew Crawl on Oct. 24, Small Business Saturday on Nov. 28, Magical Holiday Evening on Dec. 4 and Spirit & Sweater Stroll on Dec. 12.
The practical read: Oct. 3 and Oct. 17 are the two dates a family with kids will not want to double-book. Oct. 24 is the one for adults. The scavenger hunt in between is the reason to walk downtown on an otherwise ordinary Tuesday.
The park across Hopyard, on a fall Saturday
Ken Mercer Sports Park sits directly across Hopyard from the northern courts and is, for most Valley Trails residents, less a destination than an ambient presence. It is worth naming what actually happens there in the fall, because the schedule is denser than most residents realize.
Pleasanton AYSO soccer calls Ken Mercer home. Hundreds of children participate each season. Teams practice and play on designated fields across the northern complex. Pleasanton Little League baseball programs use the diamonds extensively. Pleasanton RAGE girls' softball leagues dominate several fields. Various age divisions compete throughout the spring and fall seasons. Pleasanton Junior Football League (PJFL) utilizes the grass fields during the fall months. If you have ever wondered why the Hopyard corner is congested on Saturday mornings from September through November, that is the answer. The upside for a resident without a kid on a team is that the peripheral 2.15-mile path around the park is at its most social on those mornings, and the fields make good spectator walking.
One planning note. Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 (September-February) resident registration will begin on August 13th at 8:30 a.m., and non-resident registration will begin on August 17th at 8:30 a.m. That is the city's field and program registration window, worth flagging on the fridge if anyone in the house is thinking about a rec class.
If you only leave the house once this weekend
Pick based on what you actually want out of a Saturday.
- Long walk, no crowd. Start at Valley Trails Park, take the Centennial Trail west, connect to the Arroyo Mocho, loop back on the upper path near Ken Mercer. Roughly an hour at an easy pace. Best done before 9 a.m. to avoid the youth-sports Hopyard traffic.
- Walk plus a real meal. Same loop, then cross Hopyard to Pivot for a late lunch on the patio. This is the version that did not exist a year ago.
- Family day. Skip the loop. Drive downtown for the Pumpkins on Main scavenger hunt any afternoon between Oct. 11 and Oct. 26, and time the visit to Boo Bash on Oct. 17 if you want the full carnival version.
- Grown-up night. Oct. 24. Halloween Brew Crawl downtown. Uber both ways.
The through-line is that Valley Trails works best when you treat it as a starting point rather than an interior. The neighborhood was designed with two entrances and a trail ring for a reason. Fall is the season the design actually pays off.
